6th- 8th GRADE SHOWCASE
SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT

Picture

The Project...

On Wednesday, May 19, 2021, several of our virtual NexGen students had the opportunity to join a few of our in-person students as we worked to implement our 2021 NexGen Student Service Learning Project. This project included the establishment of a pollinator garden to help our bee population, as well as the continued maintenance of our vegetable and herb gardens. To earn service learning hours for each course, students must complete several components.
  • Math: students must research either the importance of bees, cause of decline of bees, agriculture and bees, pollinator gardens and bees, or ways we can help bees. Students must include data to back up their research, and present it through an info-graphic.
  • Science: Students must either make an indigenous flower plant donation, materials for the garden, or make a public service announcement to save the bees!
  • Social Studies: students must either volunteer in the garden to help establish and maintain the garden areas, or make a timeline of bee decline by conducting research.
  • ELA: students will use what they have learned to reflect on this project with a “day in the life of a bee.” Options include a video/skit depicting the relationship between bees and humans, a poem, song, or short story sharing life from the perspective of a bee.
